With all the news surrounding Microsoft’s eerie announcement stating the era of consoles may be over, there was another surprise that came from Sony recently. A new PlayStation 4 console that is slimmer and, according to various other reports, will be sold with a newly redesigned controller as well was leaked online.
This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise considering nearly all previous PlayStation consoles were redesigned with a slimmer size at some point. Both the PS2 and PS3 had slim variants. The new PS4 console will be a bit thinner than the original. The design isn’t quite as sleek or attractive as the launch model, though.
The new controller shipping with the PS4 Slim, the DualShock 4 (DS4) isn’t too different from the original gamepad that ships with current PlayStation 4 consoles. The biggest difference is the new location of the lightbar. Instead of being located at the top-back of the controller, the DS4’s lightbar is positioned directly above the touchpad.
Few details have emerged regarding other specifications of the new controller. There could be other, less obvious alterations that have been made that just aren’t noticeable through leaked images.
An official announcement of the PS4 Slim, as well as the PS4 Neo, is expected to come sometime in early September. This is still just a rumor, but the timing seems about right. An official announcement would likely give way to additional releases such as PS4 Neo and PS4 Slim bundles – just in time for the upcoming holiday season. Right now there are only bundles available for the standard PlayStation 4 console, but we fully expect Sony to create new ones for the newer versions of the console as well.
We’ll keep you posted on these developments. As soon as new information arises or Sony puts out an official announcement, we’ll provide in-depth updates on the specifications, pricing, and other details for both the new consoles and the new DualShock 4 controller.
